Tasting Note Winemaker's Notes The 2013 Opus One offers splendid aromas of blueberry, cassis, and blackberries. A creamy entry gives way to layers of complexity which unfold in the mid-palate with velvety tannins enrobing a center of concentrated black-fruit. Elegantly balanced, the acidity and core structure deliver a persistent finish with hints of dark chocolate. Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec James Suckling 100/100 "The greatest Opus ever. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Extremely persistent. So approachable now and enjoyable. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond." International Wine Report 99/100 (2013 Vintage) The 2013 Opus One is an absolute stunning release, and is certainly one of most impressive young wines I have ever tasted from this estate. This shows a darker, more forward profile from this warm vintage, and is clearly one to contemplate, as there are so many complexities and working parts to this compelling wine. This instantly impresses as it opens to intense aromatics of crème de cassis, black cherry, blackberry compote and black plum woven together with mocha, sandalwood. The mouthfeel is voluptuous and beautifully concenrated with deep and penetrating flavors of black cherry, créme de cassis, blackberry cobbler, anise, sage and anise, which all resonate beautifully across the palate. This is already extreamly appealing, but try to resist this hedonistic wine for at least another few years, as there is undoubtedly a long future ahead. (Best 2017-2035) - September, 2016 (OB) Robert Parker 97+/100 The 2013 Opus One, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, is a beauty. Velvety textured, without a had edge to be found, notes of crème de cassis, blueberry, subtle wood and floral notes gently rise from the wine’s dense purple color. Beautifully full-bodied and extraordinarily elegant and pure, this is certainly one of their great achievements over the last 37 years. The wine has an exquisite finish and can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years. Decanter 94/100 (Vintage 2013) Red and black fruits, graphite, incense and incipient cedar meld together in a youthfully reserved bouquet that should blossom in bottle. On the palate the 2013 is more seriously structured than its polished 2012 sibling, framed by savory structural tannins. This is built for the cellar and is the latest in a string of recent successes. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. Wine Spectator 92/100 - JL Seductive from the get-go, with a supple entry to the layers of complexity, mixing flavors of mocha, currant, plum, licorice, spice and cedary oak. Well-proportioned, showing a grip of fine-grained tannins that will benefit from cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2028 Jeannie Cho Lee 94/100 Young, dense and concentrated Opus One. This vintage combines both ripeness with freshness - the finish is fairly long.
