| Tasting Note | RP 89-91/100 Backward and tannic, but still impressive, Clos Fourtet's 1996 displays a dense purple color that extends to the rim of the glass. The nose offers up sweet blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice and vanillin. Rich and impressive on the attack, the wine possesses medium body, potentially outstanding ripeness and extract, and admirable purity. However, the tannin is high, and the wine angular and tough-textured at present. This offering could go either way - developing the necessary equilibrium for an outstanding rating, or becoming more aggressively tannic and thus meriting a lower score. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. WS 89/100 Blackberry, dark chocolate and cigar box aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a medium finish.
